7 Basic Tips for Weeding Your Garden

Read Time:3 Minute, 0 Second

A combination of good tools, a little hard work, and good old ingenuity will usually do the trick to treating weeds.

What qualifies a weed?

A weed is a plant, even ornamental, which grows where you do not want it.

  • Common weeds are resistant, rapidly growing nuisances that not only make your garden unsightly but also fly nutrients and light from other plants and can host pests and diseases.

How do they grow?

Weeds may be annual, biennial, or perennial.

  • Annuals and biennials reproduce by disseminating seeds; A single plant of certain weeds can produce more than 40,000 seeds.
  • Perennials can spread through roots, stems, and seeds.

3. Soil Solarization

Solarizing the soil means letting the sun do the weeding for you.

  • Until the ground and water.
  • Place a sheet of clear plastic over the area, attach the edges with stones and wait four to six weeks.
  • The heat of the sun “cooks” the seeds of weeds and the diseases may also be found in the soil.
  • Do not dig the solarized plot prior to planting, as the crop will bring buried weed seeds to the surface.

4. Take a step ahead

Grow your garden in the fall by working with a lot of compost.

  • Rake the flowerbeds or rows in the shapes you want, then straw the surface with newspapers covered with straw, leaf debris or another organic mulch.
  • In spring, there will be no weeds to tear and your garden will be ready to plant.

5. Are you planning a new floor?

Instead of digging up grass and weeds, smother them with a piece of old carpet.

  • This method works best during the hottest weeks of summer.
  • Remove the cover in the fall, dig the floor and it will be ready to plant early in spring.

6. Be careful with compost

You can throw weeds in the pile if they are young and have not yet hatched because they do not have seeds that will come to haunt you next year.

  • To kill weed seeds, the compost must heat up to 71 ° C and few heaps will reach this temperature.
  • One solution is to place the weeds in a special compost pile and then use the finished compost only to amend deep planting holes where the weed seeds are buried at least 10 centimeters below the compost pile. Surface area.

Do not leave the soil bare for a long time or the weeds will grow directly there, they think it’s their job.

  • If you are removing plants from a flowerbed, cover the openings with mulch or plant a protective crop or another plant.
