You have finished painting for the day and you do not know how to clean? Here are five practical tips for cleaning and storing your paint tools.
1. How to Clean Paint Splashes
Remove any splashes of paint from the painted wood by wiping them with a sponge or damp cloth.
- Splashes that have dried can be cleaned by lightly rubbing with very fine glass wool (00 gauge).
2. Store the paint immediately
Transparent glass jars with lids and plastic milk bottles with stoppers are practical containers for latex paint residues. You will be able to check the color of the paint and the quantity you have left.
- Use a funnel to fill the container.
- Place some marble marbles inside to mix the paint by shaking as needed.

3. Small retouching
For small notches and scratches, use a cotton swab as a simple, disposable applicator.
- Pour a small amount of paint into a cardboard cup.
- Dip the end of the cotton swab and dab to cover the scratches.
4. Brush and roller care
- If you need a break of a few hours during your paint job, or if you are not able to finish in one day, wrap the brushes or rolls in plastic or aluminum foil tightly and store In a cool place.
- When you return to work, soften them in water (if using latex paint) or in mineral spirits (if using oil paint).
For longer-term storage, take the time to thoroughly clean brushes and quality rollers.
- Wash the brushes for latex under a steady stream of warm water and let them soak flat in a tub of lukewarm water.
- Use a small comb to remove scales from the bristles. Sponge the excess water from the brushes and hang them through the hole in the handle.
- Clean the brushes you used for oil painting with thinner for paint and hang them in a bucket of thinner.
- To hold the tip of the bristles above the bottom of the pot and prevent them from folding by soaking, hang them to an iron coat rack placed over the open pot. After a few days, remove the brushes, wipe the thinner with absorbent paper, wrap them and store them by hanging them.
- To clean a reusable roll of latex paint, wipe it repeatedly on a sheet of cardboard or newspaper until it appears almost dry. Slide the roller pad and hold it under running water until the water is clear. Wash with hot water and soap, rinse, squeeze and lightly dry with a clean dry cloth. Place the sleeve on its end for drying. Also, wash the roller holder with soap and water.
- It is possible to clean an oil paint roller sleeve with mineral spirits, without the operation necessarily worth it.
5. Keep track of your paintings
To find out what paint you used in a room, note the mark, color, and finish on the wall, moldings, and ceiling on a piece of painter’s tape.
- Glue the adhesive tape under the switch plate before replacing it at the end of the job.
