Which material for a fence?

Read Time:1 Minute, 15 Second

A garden fence plays an important role in outdoor spaces, keeping the garden secure and creating a beautiful backdrop for your plants and garden features.

If your fences are looking tired or worn, it may be time for an upgrade. Before you do so, consider which material is most suitable for your needs. Let’s look at the different possibilities.

Composite Fencing

Composite fences are constructed from recycled wood fibres and plastic. On the plus side, they’re durable, long lasting, and low maintenance. They can, however, be a more costly option.

Steel

Steel fencing is extremely durable, very strong, and offers an excellent high security option. It is very heavy, making it tougher to install, and the appearance is generally more suited to an industrial area than a home.

Metal Balustrades

Depending on your needs, it may be worth considering metal balustrades. While they aren’t a standard fence design, these vertical metal bars are wonderful for adding a little bit of style and beauty to your garden. Made from aluminium, steel or wrought iron, metal balustrades are ideal as open railings on top of walls, around patios or decking, or alongside steps.

Vinyl

Vinyl, or PVC fencing, is plastic based, resistant to corrosion, low maintenance, and easy to install. That said, it can be slightly less robust than its composite or steel counterparts.

Aluminium

Aluminium fencing is rust and corrosion resistant, durable, and can be recycled once taken down. It can be a more expensive option, depending on the design.
