Installation of metal balustrades is important to give them the correct finish. Here are the stages to the installation of a metal balustrade.
Check the Substrate First
Assess the substrate (i.e. the floor or surface) before you start drilling and fixing. This could be concrete, masonry or even timber, and check for any cracks or soft areas before you begin.
Mark Out the Post Positions
Now the post positions have been marked out along the line of the staircase or edge of the balcony, measuring between them to check that they are consistent. While checking between post positions also check that the edges are square.
Drill and Anchor the Posts
The method of fixing a post into a substrate will depend on the type of balustrade metal being used. They can be core-drilled into the substrate and then set in resin or surface-mounted using a base plate that has been bolted through. The size of the anchors that are used will depend on the manufacturer’s specification for the fixings and not to undersize them as this is a common shortcut.

Check Plumb and Rigidity
Hold the spirit level against each post. Give the assembly a good shake to check that it is rigid and does not move about. The posts should feel solid and be within 2-3 mm of true vertical.
Apply a Protective Finish
Touch up any cut ends, drilled holes, and fix heads with a compatible primer and topcoat to stop rust from developing early.
